The 8 random thing meme

Hmm. CCPhysicist (aka Dr. Pion) tagged me with the 8 random thing meme. I haven’t done one of these things lately, so I might as well respond. The 8 random thing meme, like many memes, is a way to get to know a blogger. This one has the blogger posting 8 facts about himself/herself.
The rules of the meme are as follow:
1) Post the rules before giving the facts. 2) Each player then posts eight random facts or habits about themselves. 3) People tagged are supposed to write their own blog entry about their eight things, and post these rules. 4) At the end of the entry, choose eight more people to tag and list their names. 5) Leave a comment on the tagged people’s blogs to let them know that they’ve been tagged.
OK, now the eight random things about me:
1) I had never learned to ride a horse until I went off to college. No, I didn’t have to ride a horse to class in the morning, or anything like that. I just elected to take horseback riding as one of my PE courses. It seemed silly since the horse did most of the work, but I sure enjoyed it! Later, I took more lessons and learned how to jump hurdles with the horse.
2) I have never traveled south of the Equator, though I’d like to visit Australia or New Zealand sometime. I have, though, been to Europe, Central America, and Canada (and, of course, the USA since I live here).
3) I have had the opportunity to sit in NASA’s Mission Control in Houston (in the control room, not in the observation gallery, though I’ve been there, too).
4) The first time that I looked through a telescope was with my Dad when I was a child. He had a small refractor, and we looked at Saturn, craters on the Moon, and at sunspots. But, the first time that I seriously learned to use a telescope myself was when I was in graduate school. And, the first star that I found using a telescope by myself was Albireo.
5) I really love popsicles.
6) I also really love peppers and spicy food. After the spicy food, of course, you need to suck on a popsicle.
7) I am a huge science fiction fan. It doesn’t matter: written, TV, or movie. I like it. I even like the really silly stuff.
I have spent the majority of my life living with a cat. That sort of makes sense. Cats are somewhat nocturnal, and so are astronomers.
As for tagging eight other people, I think that this meme has been floating around a bit. So, rather than tagging someone, I’ll break the chain here. I’ll let you tag yourself. But, if you do the meme, please leave a comment here saying that you are doing it!

I worked at a riding camp when I was 16. I have not been on a horse since I was 18. I would love to get back into riding!
