Happy Fourth of July to everyone. For my readers outside of the United States who don’t know it, this is the day that we celebrate Independence Day. For my readers here in the US, let’s take time out to reflect on what it means to be free. Also, let’s remember that a lot of our men and women in the military are currently serving in harm’s way, and we need to keep them in our prayers.

For my images today, I selected two NASA pictures. The one above is of Alan Shepard setting a flag in position on the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 14 mission February 5, 1971. Apollo 14 landed near the Fra Mauro formation, a large pile of material that had originally been the target for Apollo 13.

My second image, below, is of Gene Cernan saluting the American Flag during the Apollo 17 mission. Apollo 17 was a mission to the Taurus-Littrow valley and highlands area. Apollo 17 lifted off from the surface of the Moon on December 14, 1972. To this date, we have not returned men to the surface of the Moon.
