Some Eclipse Photos

The following sequence of photos were taken this morning using a Pentax K110 digital SLR and a 300mm lens. I cropped them and uploaded them. If you look carefully, you’ll see that the quality isn’t all that great. All of the photos are a bit fuzzy. While some of the blame for that is surely mine, much of it is due to the fact that I was shooting the photos through clouds. Yes, it is cloudy here! The clouds are a thin layer that washes out pretty much the whole sky except for the Moon. However, I was surprised to find that in some of the photos, you can see a hint of background stars. Cool! All of the images were at f/5.6, and the earlier ones were 1/180 second, gradually increasing exposures to 2 seconds for the last one.

Unfortunately, this is the end of the sequence. The Moon is technically still up, but the clouds have gotten thicker and so any further attempts to photograph the eclipse would be disappointing, at best. You can see the copper color to the Moon as it gets into Earth’s umbra. However, with the cloud cover, I would not even attempt to really estimate the Danjon number.

Enjoy!

I’m jealous. All we had were solid clouds - you could tell there was a moon behind them but not, really, what was going on.

Not worth waking the kids over, sadly.

My daughter wanted me to wake her up, but she is hard enough to get up in the morning. I was lucky enough to see it, off and on. Clouds were in the way periodicly, but what I did get to see was amazing.

Those are beautiful pics. The eclipse was awesome here in California, although I had to get up at 01:30 to see it.

[…] Here is NASA’s plot of the eclipse which will help explain the point references I will be using below. There’s also a website that explains lunar eclipses for beginners here. Update: Here’s an animation of the eclipse, and here are Charley’s photos of the eclipse. Astroprof also has some pictures. […]

We were lucky in Hawaii. It started at 10 pm. Banks of clouds rolled by by we had nice long stretches of clear sky to get a good sequence of pics.

    Hi Astroprof,

Long time reader, first time commenter :)

I took this sequence of pictures throughout the eclipse, from start to finish, while doing occultation work and showing ~50-60 people the eclipse!

The collage I made can be found here:

These photos were taken through a 10″ Meade Lightbridge.

Feel free to post the collage on your blog if you so wish.

Have a great day and keep blogging :)

    Regards,
    Dave B

[…]  so the last Full Moon prior to today’s Full Moon was August 28, at which time there was a lunar eclipse (you can see my photos of it here). Well, clearly September 26 is closer to the September 23 equinox than is August 28, so tonight is the Harvest Moon.  […]
