Tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in the United States. Since 1941, it has been a federal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. The tradition dates back to before the United States was a country, when a festival of thanksgiving was held at the end of the harvest season.
I just finished my last class before the holiday. We have off Thursday through Sunday. I am ready for a break! This has been a particularly tough semester for me, and I need a break to recoup. I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to find that most of my students were there today instead of taking off early.
So, let’s all (whether in the US or not) take time to reflect and give thanks for the things that we’ve got. And remember, that is what the holiday is supposed to be about — not just stuffing your face with food until you make yourself sick.
