The National Space Society and Hadley Rille Books are hosting a Return to Luna science fiction writing contest. Contestants are to submit a short story (2000 to 6000 words) about lunar exploration, preferably in the near future.   (To illustrate how little that is, yesterday’s posting about escape velocity was only a little over 2000 words).  They are looking for short stories that capture the romance and excitement of lunar exploration or life in a lunar colony. They want realistic stories (or what you feel is a realistic extension of current technology). There are some restrictions. There should be no aliens, faster than light travel, horror, gratuitous sex or violence, and no foul language. The stories need to be set entirely on the Moon (I wonder if that can include landing on the Moon or lunar orbit?). You can look at the announcement of the contest to see more about the requirements and how to submit them.

The submissions will be judged and winners will have their stories published in an anthology, Return to Luna. Hadley Rille Books says that they anticipate publication to be late 2008. Authors of the selected works will receive one year’s free membership in the National Space Society.

This is a great opportunity for those who are just getting started writing. So, if you have been meaning to get into writing science fiction, this may be your opportunity.

Hello, Astroprof–Thanks for posting this. I would add that winning authors will also be eligible for royalties. The guidelines are being updated. And, yes, landing on the Moon, or orbit about it certainly qualifies.
