For those of you in the area, Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer, will be speaking Tuesday, April 15, at Tarrant County College - NE Campus (in Hurst, a suburb of Fort Worth). He’ll be speaking at 12:20 in the Student Center. The event is free, so if you get a chance, be sure to take a late lunch, or some such, and come hear him speak. The level of the talk is for the public, so you don’t have to be an astronomer to come hear him. In fact, his talk is perfect for people who are not astronomers, but who simply have an interest in science. But, even seasoned astronomers will get a kick out of hearing him.
Oh, but the way, Phil may be the Bad Astronomer, but he is actually a quite good astronomer. He is the “Bad Astronomer” because he wrote a book titled Bad Astronomy. It is really a good book. Everyone should read it.

To be an amateur astronomer, you can study and learn things on your own. To do serious work, though, you need to study quite a bit of physics and mathematics. To be a professional astronomer, you generally need a graduate degree in astronomy or physics.
