Internet Explorer 7 Problems?

Hmm. Maybe someone out there knows more about this than I do. However, I suspect that Internet Explorer 7 does not work well with Astroprof’s Page. Actually, it seems to have a number of issues that I’ve found. And, I suspect that IE7 is seizing up my web site sometimes.

Personally, at home I’ve used Firefox for a long time. I really like the features, and it seems to load faster and my computer runs faster and accesses web pages faster. I have also felt that it has had much better security, but that is from someone not an expert in browsers. The computers at the college all have windows, and IE6 has been a standard component. I installed Firefox on my office computer, but often got lazy and used Internet Explorer. Already, I have seen that there are formating issues with Internet Explorer when I look at my web page that I don’t see with Firefox or Opera browsers. In fact, I’ve sometimes seen some downright strange things when looking at my web page with Internet Explorer.

But, lately there have been other issues. Over the semester break, the college installed Internet Explorer 7 on all of the computers on campus. They didn’t ask. It was just one of the automatic updates. And that has been a major headache. Anytime you log into any computer on campus, if you have not used that particular computer since the update, it stops, grinds, thinks, pauses, and hangs up for 1 to 3 minutes while it sets up your IE7 options. That is every computer, even if you don’t try to use IE. This happens at the login. I have run into this on my office computer, the lab computers, the computers in the classrooms, etc. If I plan to give a presentation somewhere on campus, in any classroom, the first time I use that computer, it goes through this. And this has been a nightmare for the students. They go to a computer lab, and they have to sit and wait when they login. But, the next time they go to that computer lab, they generally wind up sitting at a different computer, so they have to go through it all again. And this is supposed to be better somehow????

But, now I’ve run into an even more annoying problem. A few times in the last few weeks, when I tried to post something to Astroprof’s Page, my browser hung up, and I got an error message about exceeding a CPU limit, and my account temporarily suspended. Huh? All I was doing was posting something. What’s up? I got to thinking, this only happened when posting from my office. My office has a FAST internet connection, unlike my home computer, so that didn’t make sense. But, it also only happened after the “update” to Internet Explorer 7. Finally, a couple days ago when I was posting about what constellations you could see when, it did it again, and I lost my post. I frantically rewrote it, while rather irritated. I talked to my webhost, and they had me look at the error log for my account. I found that this has happened a number of times other than when it happened to me, and it started back mid December, and has increased in frequency. What gives? Well, they said that it looked like WordPress was hanging up, and suggested that perhaps one of my plugins was to blame. But, I have not changed nor added any plugins since October! Why the problems starting in December. Oh, wait. I also noticed on my stats that IE7 started to be used to access my account beginning in December. And, I never had issues on my own until I tried to use IE7. But, it locks up the account, so once it happened, I couldn’t even access it with Firefox.

So, I have no proof, only a hypothesis. I know that IE7 has issues. Once it came out, we found out that it could not be used with our online registration system at the college (students could not use it to register, and faculty could not use it to report grades or access class rosters). They had to do a fix to the registration system in order for IE7 to be used. So, I have reason to suspect that is the cause. So has anyone out there had similar issues? Has anyone had problems with my web page using IE7? Normally, I haven’t either — just sometimes. And, if it is locking up, then even people with other browsers won’t be able to access the site if they try to do so right after it locked up. Hmm. Suggestions, anyone?

PS:  In another annoying development regarding the “updates” that our IT department put into place, I can now no longer use my flash drive with my lectures on it on any computer other than in my office, unless I’ve used it on that computer before.  When I tried in yesterday, I got an error message saying that I did not have privaleges to install new hardware on the computer in the classroom.  Some upgrade this is.  I guess that I am supposed to use floppies?  I just wish that my lectures fit on floppies.   So, Profgrrrrl has company dealing with IT issues.

IE7 has caused me more headaches than I can recall.

And you are not alone! I’ve talked to other bloggers and web geeks and many people are VERY unhappy with IE7.

I even came across an IT department of major corporation who was ticked off that IE7 was ruining the login process on one of their servers.

If I had the chance, I would go back to IE6. Hopefully M$ will roll out an improved browser by the time Vista comes out, otherwise I am going to have to manually disable IE7 from loading on my machine.

IE7 might be locking the account you use to access your blog. Unless I really don’t understand how web stuff works (or I’m not understanding you correctly) it should not be able to lock out other people who access. Unless it’s doing something really wonky to the blog.

    Grrrrl,
You might be amazed at how behind the curve some of our IT administrators are. I am just happy that they give us computers instead of typewriters.

    Brian,
I think IE7 is somehow doing something really strange that causes Wordpress to go wild tying up the server until the web host kills the process and temporarily suspends my account. And, I can’t figure out what is does, or why. But, I admit that I am no expert at how this web stuff works, myself.
