Tomorrow and the next few days, I’ll be at the 2007 International Space Development Conference. As I did with the American Astronomical Society Meeting in January, I’ll try to post some things that I see and hear while there, so stay tuned. Normally, I got to astronomical conferences, which are more closely related to my research and teaching areas, but I am also really interested in space exploration (as long time readers obviously can tell!), and this conference is right in my backyard, so travel won’t be an issue. Also, classes don’t start at the college until Tuesday, so I won’t be missing anything much. Besides, there will be some astronomy at the conference, so part of it really is directly related to my field.
The International Space Development Conference is put on by the National Space Society. This is the 26th year that they’ve held the conference. It is held in different cities across North America (once in Toronto, the rest in the US), but this is the first time that it will be held in Dallas (though it was twice in Houston and once in San Antonio, Texas). NASA is sponsoring the conference.
The theme of the conference is “From Old Frontiers to New: Celebrating 50 Years of Space Flight.” There will be several programming tracks, including topics such as Lunar exploration, development, and settlements, Mars exploration, rocket technology, space medicine, space enterprises, space law, International Space Station science, and more! There is a lot going on, and naturally there are several things happening at the same time, so I have to pick and choose what sessions I go to. Unfortunately, as often happens, there are several times when multiple things that I really want to hear are happening at the same time.
I have also heard that there will be actual space hardware on display at the conference, including a rocket from Armadillo Aerospace, a local Texas company.
So, stay tuned for more conference blogging!
